Them Crooked Vultures is a brand new band that Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) put together. In his 40th birthday, Dave invited John Paul Jones (Led Zepelin) and Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) to his birthday party at the Medieval Times where he sat them together. After a while; they were convinced that they would like to collaborate together. So after 8 months of recording, and jamming a self-titled album was released! Homme is on the guitar, vocals and lyrics. As usual; his lyrics are about lust and not love, escaping reality and how to get away with things. Grohl is on the drums; playing with the same energy as always while John adds some funky bass lines to the mix. Overall; the sound of this record tends to lean more towards the style of QOTSA or Kyuss; the high-pitched guitar slides and that “desert rock” influence is clearly present. As a classically blues-trained musician, John Paul Johns adds a looser vibe on some of the songs that are reminiscent of the heavier Zepelin. And as usual, Dave rips on those drums making some bad ass beats. I was skeptical at this eccentric combination at first, especially by adding Jones; but it all sounds really kick ass! Check them out!
